In 1996 a group of intrepid history and community enthusiasts joined together to form the Friends of the Ypsilanti Freighthouse. Since then, the group has served in various capacities as the fundraising, caretaking, advocacy and staffing arm of the historic, city-owned Ypsilanti Freighthouse.
From 1996 to 2004, the FOYF served the Ypsilanti community by fundraisers for the Freighthouse as the city began to face austerity.

The mission of the Friends of the Ypsilanti Freighthouse is to preserve the heritage of the Freighthouse through fostering inclusive community participation by providing an environmentally sound gathering place for recreation, celebration, arts, education and local activities to increase opportunity for personal and collective growth in the Depot Town community.
The FOYF has been tirelessly committed to helping raise funds for the Freighthouse construction and operating expenses, and serving as facilitators for all of the various requirements by the City, the State, the Historic District Committee, and the public.
